BEHIND CLOSED DOORS --- This Women’s History Month, The Artist Studios and WEAVE proudly present ‘Behind Closed Doors’, a solo exhibition for domestic violence awareness by Juliet Elise Rodriguez. This series draws inspiration from the artist’s experiences and the vulnerable, powerful statements gathered anonymously by local women at all stages of abuse recovery. The multi-medium works in this series discuss shared experiences that transcend age, culture, identity, and status. The impact of these experiences expands beyond individual human experience and into a deeply rooted cycle of oppression. Using a balance of haunting and feminine imagery, Elise’s work explores the connection between active abuse and healing to reclaiming feminine power, challenging the characterization of abused women as powerless individuals.

The Art

The work in this series is inspired by personal experience and anonymous statements submitted by local survivors of domestic violence. Twenty five survivors graciously responded to the survey call (October-November 2022). The five art pieces at the end of this slideshow were created prior to the Behind Closed Doors series during a period of active abuse, and were included for additional context.
